せんきょ

EAS/POL三百二十九で、日本のせんきょをべんきょうするから、そだかずひろさんのえいがを見ました。そださんのえいがのなまえは　"せんきょ"　です。えい語で、"Campaign"　ですよ。えいがで、山内和彦さんのせんきょをみました。

山内和彦です。ここ、だれもにはなしました。（はんと！）

だねえ！だれも聞きませんでした。

せんきょで、ぜんぜん　ポリシーをいいませんでした。いつも「こいずみさんと、りフォームをしたい！」をいうけど、リフォームが分かりまなかった。

このしゃしんで、ポリシーをいいました。でも、えいがの唯一の時間、そしてポリシーをわすれしました。

でも、それはすべてじゃなかった！

山内さんの先生 (upper level congressional officials) は山内をたすけたい。でも、先生は山内がきらいでした！

よく「おそい！」や「ちがう！」や「よわい！」をいいました。たいへんですね！

山内のスタっフは山内がきらいですね。

山内和彦さんのアドバタイズメントはこいずみのアドバタイズメントのとなりでありました。でも、ミスですね。かなしいですね。。。

Katakana Analysis

Introductory textbooks tend to introduce katakana as fulfilling particular, well defined roles - namely, when writing foreign words or onomatopoeia. However, through my research, I began to see katakana more broadly as a tool to emphasize the word thereby depicted. Because it has this capability, it is often used to represent words from foreign languages (many of which have kanji or hiragana terms that convey similar ideas) and in onomatopoeia (where it can represent an animal's accent, a surprising noise, etc.)  as addressed in textbooks. However, there are other notable uses as well.
Wikipedia mentions that katakana is also regularly used for scientific terms and the names of plants, animals, and corporations.
Ben Bullock, author of the sci.lang.japan website, mentions a few other uses. He explains that katakana was the first Japanese language used on computers, and, as a remnant of that, all banking information is written with katakana. Additionally, he tells us that katakana marks not only foreign words but also foreign accents and, interestingly, was used until the 1940s where we now use hiragana in marking okurigana.

Takumi Murayama, born in Japan and a native speaker, has a new, insightful take: "I always thought of Katakana as what you would use if you didn't know what to use," he responded.
